An Introduction to Ayurveda

Ayurveda is derived from two Sanskrit words “Ayur”, or life, and “Veda”, or knowledge, Ayurveda is a “science of life”. The concept of Ayurveda is complete, as it covers not only physical, but also mental and spiritual aspects of a human.

Ayurveda is the world’s oldest science of health care. What has to exist – exists, no matter what way the world changes. Any science, that is applicable, survives through different generations and flows from one generation to another. Ayurveda is a science which has faced the turmoil of time and is still a leading health care system. The oldest written tradition dates back around 5,000 years, but the oral tradition of Ayurveda is timeless.

The Tridosha Principle

The fundamental principle of Ayurveda is theTridosh principle or the 3 Humours Principle. The Tridoshas are Vata, Pitta & Kapha. This can also be understood as combination of panchbhutas (Five Elements) into three doshas.

These are biological or physiological and physical forces that cater to the metabolic functions and structural composition of our body. Kapha is responsible for anabolism. Pitta is responsible for metabolism. vata is responsible for catabolism.

The balance of these 3 humours is known as a state of health and their imbalance is disease. Anything which restores this balance is good for health. So specific diet, exercise, behaviour or medicine can be recommended according to prakriti to restore this balance and provide health.
